Futures Thinking is a disciplined, research-informed approach to examining multiple possible futures so leaders can make wiser choices in the present (Miller, 2018; GAO, 2020).
Futures Thinking tests assumptions, surfaces uncertainty, and explores how forces interact over time—revealing risks, opportunities, and second-order effects before they become locked in (Inayatullah, 2008). It asks: What futures are emerging, which are worth preserving or pursuing, and what responsibilities do we carry toward those who come next? (Miller, 2018)
At Civic Futures Institute, we apply Futures Thinking to civic life—how people participate, build trust, govern together, and renew and sustain democratic institutions. Using horizon scanning, scenario development, and futures mapping, we help communities identify early signals of change and make decisions with longer time horizons and greater civic confidence (Inayatullah, 2008; GAO, 2020).
Why this matters now
America is strained by polarization, short-term thinking, and eroding trust. Many believe the system is fixed and unmovable - but the disruptions of the present moment reveal that the future is still open, and can be shaped by the choices we make. Civic Futures Institute is guided by a simple conviction drawn from America's own promise: this is the Country of Tomorrow, and its renewal requires the engagement of each citizen.
